Louise Brooks in Brazil: a Brazilian scholar responds to an earlier LBS blog

Earlier last year, this blog participated in the 4th Luso World Cinema blogathon, which celebrates the contributions of Portuguese-speaking peoples and their descendants to world cinema. Back on May 6th, this LBS blog published a post titled "Louise Brooks & Her Films as Seen in Brazilian Magazines & Newspapers". That piece gathered a handful of vintage newspaper and magazine clippings about Louise Brooks and her films. There were, as well, a few bits about Brooks as referenced in contemporary Brazilian media.

That 2024 blog referenced Tamara Carla dos Santos, who was then a student in the Postgraduate Program in Image and Sound at the Federal University of São Carlos. I mentioned that Tamara had participated in a 2021 podcast titled "Recepção da obra de Louise Brooks no Brasil é tema de pesquisa na UFSCar," which addressed Tamara's research on the reception of Brooks' films in Brazil

A few days ago, Tamara posted a couple of comments in the original May 6, 2024 post. She wrote, "I'm Tamara, Brazilian author of the master's thesis "Lulu no Brasil". You mentioned my video in the text. I was the one who sent Thomas Gladyz my thesis by email when it was finished. Today I work at the Cinemateca Brasileira and was able to access Louise's autographed photograph to the institution. Thank you very much for mentioning my name. I dedicated years of my career to Louise and I greatly admire your work....  I also just published an article about Louise - a shortened version of my thesis - in Vivomatografias, a Latin American magazine about silent cinema. http://www.vivomatografias.com/index.php/vmfs/article/view/492"

I am so very pleased to learn that this blog continues to be read by fans from around the world. I encourage everyone to check out Tamara's article via the link above. Once there, be sure to click through to the PDF file under "Texto completo".

Thank you Tamara Carla dos Santos! Thank you for writing. And thank you for letting everyone know of Louise Brooks' presence in Brazil -- both yesterday and today.
