Out

I just came across this piece on Peter Cowie's Louise Brooks: Lulu Forever. It appeared in the September 2006 issue of Out, a gay men's magazine.

In case you haven't already gotten a copy of Peter Cowie's book, now is the time to do so! It contains a thoughtful text on Brooks (who Cowie knew), as well as dozens and dozens of lovely and rare images of the actress.

If you can't afford a copy, perhaps you local library  has one on the shelves. If they don't, suggest they purchase a copy for their collection. Many local library websites have a  "make a suggestion" page where patrons can suggest  new books.

Louise Brooks: Lulu Forever

Today, I received my copy of Louise Brooks: Lulu Forever by Peter Cowie. (Copies are not due in stores for about a week.) It is absolutely gorgeous! It is a book every Brooks fan will want to own . . . .  I had written my review for Publisher's Weeklybased on page proofs (an early version of the book which was sent to me by the publisher). This finished copy is so much more appealing. The images look really stunning. Wow!

Lulu Forever

Here is a picture of the stunning poster for Louise Brooks: Lulu Forever mounted in the film section at The Booksmith in San Francisco. That store (my place of employ) will be hosting author Peter Cowie at the Balboa Theater on Sunday, November 12th. It will be an event not to be missed!

Anyone who might want to purchase an autographed first edition hardback copy of Cowie's new book should contact the Booksmith to place an order.

German edition of Louise Brooks: Lulu Forever

I just came across this webpage, which announces the German edition of Louise Brooks: Lulu Forever, by Peter Cowie. The cover varies slightly from the American edition. And the descriptive text - copied below - reads with an interest. The book will retail in Germany for 49,80 euros and according to this page, will be available on September 15 (before the title is available in the United States).
Silent movie star and femme fatale Louise Brooks, who made 24 films between 1925 and 1938, is best known for her role as Lulu in the 1929 German classic Pandora’s Box. Lulu Forever is the opulently illustrated chronique scandaleuse of this seductive, rebellious nymphet with bob. Too intelligent for Hollywood, she was rediscovered in the 1970s and has become a 20th-century icon. German edition.

Schirmer/Mosel. With introductions by Dan Brooks and Jack Garner. 240 pages, 169 duotone plates. Size: 21,5 x 31,7 cm, hardcover. ISBN-13: 978-3-8296-0257-0.

Louise Brooks: Lulu Forever

Yesterday, I finished reading Louise Brooks: Lulu Forever, the new book by Peter Cowie. I had been sent the page proofs, because I will be writing something about the book prior to publication. (The book is due in stores October 31st - a couple of weeks prior to the 100th anniversary of Louise Brooks' birth. BTW: want to get a signed copy? Contact the Booksmith in San Francisco. They will be hosting an event with the author in early November.)

This new book is heavily illustrated (it is a coffee table book), though it contains a long essay on Brooks, her life, and her films. (I think Cowie distills the myth of Louise Brooks = the myth of Lulu - in a satisfactory way.) Most fascinating to me are the anecdotes about Brooks (Cowie visited with her in Rochester) and the excerpts from the correspondence that Cowie and Brooks had over the course of a number of years. Page proofs are a little "rough" - I can't wait to see a finished copy. I think Louise Brooks fans will like this book.

Louise Brooks: Lulu Forever

If you are like me, I know you are excited about the forthcoming book on Louise Brooks. Here's a little bit more info about the book - a page from the publisher's catalog. The book is scheduled to be released on October 31st. It is a coffee table book measuring 8 1/2 inches by 12 1/2 inches and runs  256 pages with 175 photographs. (Notice the alternative cover pictured here - which differs from the one posted to amazon.com. I can't decide which I like better.)
